Day 1: Arrival in Inverness
Arrive independently at the hotel from 15.00. After time to settle in, meet your fellow travellers for a welcome drink reception before a talk from your host, Robin Cairns: ‘The Downfall of a Proper Charlie’ based on Bonnie Prince Charlie and Culloden.
Dinner with wine is served at the hotel.
Day 2: Inverness Castle, a cruise, and Inverness Cathedral
After breakfast, begin our tour with a visit to Inverness Castle, dramatically situated above the River Ness. Occupying a site associated with Scottish history for centuries, the newly opened Inverness Castle Experience provides an excellent introduction to the Highlands through immersive exhibits and spectacular views across the city and surrounding countryside.
Next, enjoy a dolphin-watching cruise on the Moray Firth, one of the best places in Europe to observe bottlenose dolphins in the wild. The Moray Firth is home to a resident population of these remarkable animals, and the excursion offers an opportunity to appreciate both the wildlife and scenery of Scotland’s north-east coast.
Late afternoon we visit Inverness Cathedral, officially known as the Cathedral Church of St Andrew. Completed in the nineteenth century, the cathedral is one of Scotland’s finest examples of Gothic Revival architecture.
Return to the hotel for dinner.
Day 3: Culloden Battlefield and Fort George
Following breakfast, visit Culloden Battlefield, the site of one of the most significant events in Scottish history. It was here, in April 1746, that the Jacobite Rising came to its dramatic conclusion. The excellent visitor centre brings the events of the battle vividly to life through interactive displays, personal accounts and artefacts.
We then continue to Fort George, the immense military fortress built by the government in the aftermath of Culloden. One of the finest eighteenth-century fortifications in Europe, the fort remains remarkably complete and offers an insight into military life in the Highlands during a period of profound change. Its spectacular location on the Moray Firth also provides opportunities to enjoy stunning coastal views.
Day 4: Urquhart Castle and Loch Ness
This morning, enjoy a memorable cruise along the historic Caledonian Canal and across the legendary waters of Loch Ness, taking in some of the Highland’s most spectacular scenery. Passing through a series of locks and waterways engineered by Thomas Telford, the journey offers a fascinating insight into one of Scotland’s greatest civil engineering achievements. Keep watch for breathtaking views, abundant wildlife and perhaps even a glimpse of the elusive Loch Ness Monster.
Our next visit is to Urquhart Castle, one of Scotland’s most dramatic historic sites. Occupying a strategic position overlooking the loch, the castle witnessed centuries of conflict during the Wars of Independence and the struggles between Highland clans. Its impressive ruins and magnificent setting combine to create one of the country’s most memorable historic landmarks.
Afterwards, visit the Loch Ness Experience, where the story of the world’s most famous mystery is explored through scientific investigations, eyewitness accounts and local legends. The exhibition examines how the tale of the Loch Ness Monster has captured imaginations across the globe for generations.
Return to the hotel for dinner. This evening Robin will entertain us with some Scottish poems, myths and folklore.
Day 5: Dunrobin Castle & the Whisky Trail
Our first visit today is to Dunrobin Castle, one of Scotland’s most impressive and distinctive stately homes. Resembling a French château, the castle has been home to the Earls and Dukes of Sutherland for centuries. Explore the elegant interiors and discover a rich collection of paintings, furnishings and historic artefacts, while the formal gardens provide impressive views towards the Moray Firth.
Later, explore the heritage of Scotland’s national drink with a visit to a local distillery. Learn about the traditions and craftsmanship involved in whisky production and discover how the unique character of the region influences the spirit produced here. The visits offer a fascinating insight into one of Scotland’s most important cultural industries.
This evening, gather for a farewell dinner with wine at the hotel.
Day 6: Strathspey Steam Railway and Highland Folk Museum
On our final morning we venture into the spectacular Cairngorms and enjoy a scenic journey aboard the historic Strathspey Railway, travelling through beautiful Highland landscapes. Enjoy some free time in Aviemore before continuing to the fascinating Highland Folk Museum to discover the traditional Highland life and heritage.
Return to the hotel for approx. 17.00.
