Fitness & Mobility

Mobility Information

The enjoyment of your tour starts with choosing the right one. That means giving you as much practical information as possible about what each itinerary involves, so you can decide whether it is a good fit for you.

Many of the places we visit are rewarding to explore and, in some cases, can be more challenging than modern environments. Ancient cobbled streets, medieval staircases, archaeological sites with uneven ground, gardens with gravel paths and historic buildings without lifts are often part of what makes these places special. Most tours also involve boarding a coach or train independently, sometimes with luggage, and spending time on your feet throughout the day.

What you will find on each tour page

Every itinerary carries a fitness rating, but we also aim to flag specific practical details directly in the day-by-day itinerary – the kind of information that makes a real difference when deciding whether a tour is right for you. If a cathedral has 200 steps with no lift, we say so. If a visit involves steep paths, extended walking or uneven ground, we aim to make this clear in advance. Our aim is to help you build an accurate picture of the tour experience before you travel

This does not necessarily mean the whole tour is unsuitable, but it may help you decide whether to sit out a particular visit, choose a gentler itinerary, or call us before booking. Where practical, you may be able to opt out of all or part of a day’s programme if you feel a visit may be too demanding, although this will depend on the location, facilities and timing involved. Our team is always happy to discuss the practicalities of any itinerary before you book.

Things to consider before booking

Unless a tour page states otherwise, guests on most Travel Editions tours should generally be able to:

• Get on and off a coach or train independently
• Walk at a steady group pace
• Stand for periods of time during guided visits
• Manage steps, stairs or slopes where lifts are not available
• Walk short distances between coach drop-off points and attractions
• Handle their own luggage when required, particularly at airports, stations and hotels
• Enjoy a full day of sightseeing, which may include early starts, several visits, and limited opportunities to sit down

Historic buildings, churches, museums, gardens and archaeological sites are not always designed with modern access in mind. Depending on the destination, you may encounter cobbles, uneven paving, gravel paths, grass, slopes, stairs, low lighting or areas where seating is limited.

Our tour managers and local guides are there to look after the smooth running of the tour and support the group throughout the journey. However, they are unable to provide one-to-one mobility assistance.
If you require regular assistance with walking, steps, transport or luggage, please speak to us before booking and we will be happy to advise whether a particular itinerary is likely to be suitable.
Some tours may not be suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters or certain walking aids because of the nature of the sites we visit.

Where we are aware of potential limitations, we aim to make these clear on the relevant tour page.

Our tour gradings

Each Travel Editions tour has a fitness rating to help you understand the general pace and physical nature of the itinerary. The rating takes into account more than just walking distance. It reflects the overall rhythm of the tour, including time spent on your feet, the type of terrain you may encounter, the number of visits in a day, access to transport, steps and stairs, and the pace of the itinerary.
Every traveller experiences a tour differently, so these ratings are intended as a helpful guide rather than a measure of fitness. They are there to help you choose an itinerary where you can relax and make the most of every experience.

Gentle – A more relaxed-paced itinerary, with time to enjoy visits at a comfortable rhythm. There may still be some walking between sites, periods of standing during guided visits, and occasional steps, slopes or cobbled areas, particularly in historic towns, gardens and older buildings. You should be comfortable walking for around 30 minutes at a steady pace and standing independently during visits.

Moderate – A fuller itinerary with a good balance of visits and exploration. You can expect more time on your feet, including walking between sites, longer periods of standing and some uneven surfaces, cobbles, steps or gentle inclines. Some days may include several visits, longer coach journeys or walking from a drop-off point to an attraction. A reasonable level of fitness and the ability to keep pace with the group throughout the day will help you enjoy the experience fully.

Demanding – A more active itinerary, often involving longer days of exploration and visits where walking conditions may be more varied. You may encounter uneven terrain, cobbled streets, archaeological sites, steep paths, steps, limited seating or historic buildings where lifts are unavailable. These tours are designed for travellers who enjoy a fuller day of discovery and who are comfortable spending extended periods walking and standing. A good level of fitness and mobility will help you get the most from the itinerary.

More relaxed-paced tours

Following feedback from our travellers, we have been steadily adding tours designed around a more relaxed pace. These itineraries offer the same depth of exploration, specialist insight and carefully considered experiences as our other tours — the difference is simply the pace at which the day unfolds. With more time built into the itinerary, they allow you to enjoy each destination at a gentler rhythm, with fewer demands on your time and energy. If pace is an important consideration for you, our team can advise which tours are likely to be the best fit.

Walking tours

Our dedicated walking tours carry their own grading, reflecting the more active nature of these itineraries. These tours are designed for travellers who enjoy exploring on foot and discovering destinations through their landscapes, streets and pathways. As with all our tours, the grading is intended to help you choose the experience that best matches your interests and comfort level.

Moderate – A manageable walking itinerary with relatively gentle terrain and limited elevation. Comfortable walking shoes are essential, and you should be happy walking for several hours over the course of a day with regular stops to explore.

Challenging – A more active walking experience, with varied terrain and some significant ascents — potentially involving 300 to 400 metres of elevation in a day. Walking poles are recommended, and a good level of fitness will help you enjoy the experience.

Difficult – Our most active walking itineraries, involving substantial hills, 500 metres or more of elevation in a day and more challenging ground underfoot. Good walking boots and poles are essential, along with a strong level of fitness and confidence on varied terrain.

Choosing the right tour

We know that mobility and fitness vary from person to person, and that a grading can only ever be a guide. Everyone experiences travel differently. A grading provides a useful overview, but the most important thing is choosing an itinerary that matches the way you like to explore. One traveller may be comfortable walking all day but find standing still difficult; another may manage museums easily but prefer to avoid cobbles, stairs or steep paths. This is why the practical details matter. The type of ground, the rhythm of the day and the style of visits can all make a difference to your enjoyment.

If you are unsure, please contact us before booking. The more we understand about what you need from a tour, the better we can help you find an itinerary where you can travel with confidence and enjoy every part of the experience.
