Rhodes Tour: History, Culture & Scenic Delights

Rhodes, capital of the Dodecanese, was part of the Roman and Byzantine empires, before being conquered by the Knights of St John who occupied the island from 1306 to 1519 and whose city still dominates Rhodes town.

It is a fascinating town with a wealth of enthralling ancient buildings including the spectacular Palace of the Grand Masters.

The island beyond offers glorious scenery and a host of historic sights from fortresses and castles to rustic whitewashed villages.

Learn more about the highlights you’ll experience, the unforgettable places you’ll visit, and the unique moments that bring each destination to life. Day 1: London Gatwick to Rhodes

Fly from London Gatwick to Rhodes and transfer to the Rhodes Plaza in Rhodes Town for a seven-night stay. Evening at leisure.

Day 2: Guided Tour of Rhodes

Leisurely morning, followed by a guided tour of historic Rhodes Town. Dominated by the Palace of the Grand Masters, a fortress within a fortress, the citadel old town of Rhodes is surrounded by moats and 3km of walls and is a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Accessed by 11 gates, the town is divided into the Collachium, which was the knights’ quarter, dating from 1309, and the Burgh, which housed the rest of the population that included Jews, Turks and Greeks. It is one of the finest walled cities in existence and a visit here is truly a journey into the past. A comprehensive guided walking tour will show you the highlights including the fortifications, Palace of the Knights and the Archaeological Museum. Rest of the day free. Dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: Full Day Tour to Lindos

A popular tourist destination and National Historic Landmark, Lindos enjoys a dramatic location overlooking the Mediterranean. With its dazzling white houses, Crusader Castle and ancient Acropolis, it offers a wealth of history as well as rustic charm. It is closed to traffic, so donkeys are still the way to travel if you want the ‘easy’ route up to the Acropolis.

Please note that on Day 3, there are around 300 steps at Lindos.

Day 4: Full Day to Filerimos & Kamiros

Discovered in 1859, ancient Kamiros was a thriving Doric community during the 5th-century BC. Remains here include a temple, public baths and water cistern. One of Rhodes’ beauty spots, the hillsides of Filerimos are home to cypress and pine trees, amongst which sits Moni Filerimos, its domed chapels decorated with the cross of the Knights and the coat of arms of the Grand Master. Dinner included tonight.

Day 5: Free Day in Rhodes

Day free for relaxation or independent exploration of Rhodes.

Day 6: Visit to the Island of Symi

Today we board a ferry to Symi (approx. one hour) for a relaxed visit to this tiny island. The harbour area of Symi town is one of the most beautiful in Greece, surrounded by gracious houses and elaborate churches built on the hillside.

The town is divided into two, with the lower town Gialos connected to the upper area, Chorio, by road or by 275 marble steps. It is an atmospheric maze of narrow lanes and traditional houses, sights include the interesting Symi Museum and Byzantine church of Archangel Michael of Panormitis.

The harbour area is a delightful place for a leisurely lunch. Dinner tonight is at a local taverna.

Day 7: Full Day Island Tour

A full day island tour with your local guide who will take you to a varied series of stops at medieval castles, churches, an olive oil factory, pottery workshop followed by an included lunch in a local village taverna.

Day 8: Transfer to Rhodes Airport

Return flight to London Gatwick.

Tour FAQ

If you have a question, we are more than happy to answer it via email or phone, but you may find your answer below more quickly.

Simply complete our online booking form or give us a call on 020 7251 0045 between 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday where you can speak to a real person. A 20% deposit per person is required at the time of booking, to book your place. Payments by debit card or credit card incur no charge.

You must pay for the balance of your holiday at least 12 weeks before departure. Please note: no reminder for balance payments is sent to you and are not receipted unless requested. If you book your holiday within 12 weeks of departure, full payment is required at time of booking. Please note that some tours may require final payment to be paid earlier than 12 weeks, due to financial commitment with suppliers. The exact date will be notified to you at the time of booking. Final joining instructions and documentation will be dispatched approximately 10 days before travel.

In almost all cases, the price includes your accommodation, meals as described in the itinerary, all excursions shown in the programme, and travel arrangements from the UK. Excursions are taken by private coach exclusively for Travel Editions guests. If anything is ever excluded from the price, it will be clearly marked as optional and payable locally, you won’t find any hidden extras on your final bill. Travel Editions operates a firm no-surcharge policy, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

The specifics vary by tour and are set out in your individual itinerary, but most of our tours depart from London, either by Eurostar from St Pancras International or by air. For rail tours, we advise allowing at least one hour before the Eurostar departure when planning your journey to London. For flights, all costs are based on economy class unless otherwise stated, and all times shown are local time. For tours in the UK, these often start at the hotel in question.

Flight upgrades and connections from regional airports are available on request and subject to availability, contact us on 020 7251 0045 or at tours@traveleditions.co.uk for details. We strongly recommend not booking non-refundable connecting travel until you have received your final joining instructions, which are sent around 10 days before departure and confirm all timings and meeting points.

Yes, and you’re very welcome. Single room supplements apply on most tours, reflecting the fact that single and double rooms are generally priced similarly by hotels. If you would prefer to share with another solo traveller of the same gender, we are happy to arrange this, simply let us know at the time of booking. Sharing is subject to another traveller in the same situation being booked on the same tour.

Each tour is accompanied by a dedicated tour manager, who in most cases will travel out from the UK with the group. On some tours, the tour manager will meet you at your destination station or airport, with full details being confirmed in your joining instructions 10 days before travel. Many of our tours are also led by expert lecturers or specialist guides whose knowledge brings each destination to life; details of who will be accompanying your particular tour are included in the individual tour pages and itineraries.
