Provence by Rail Tour 2027
We travel to Provence by rail for a cultural tour shaped by Roman history, Provençal towns and vineyard country. The itinerary highlights Avignon, Aix, Arles, the Camargue, Orange and Châteauneuf-du-Pape, giving travellers a broad view of the region without relying on self-drive arrangements.
Provence has long drawn artists, writers and travellers, with its warm light, vineyard landscapes and historic towns. Based in Aix-en-Provence, we explore the region’s many layers, from Cézanne’s preserved studio and the café-lined Cours Mirabeau to Roman sites including Orange’s ancient theatre, the Pont du Gard and Nîmes.
There is also time to enjoy the flavours and landscapes that give Provence its character, with a light lunch and wine tasting in Châteauneuf-du-Pape, visits to Arles and Les Baux-de-Provence, a short boat cruise in the Camargue, and time in Marseille and Cassis.

Day 1: Journey by Rail to Aix-en-Provence
On arrival, transfer by coach to Hotel Aquabella. This evening there will be a welcome reception at the hotel with drinks and some nibbles included.
Day 2: Aix-en-Provence and Cézanne’s Studio
The elegant city of Aix-en-Provence is immediately attractive with its medieval centre a knot of grand architecture and atmospheric lanes, peppered with fountained squares. Home to artist Paul Cézanne, we will find his studio preserved much as he left it at his death in 1906. There are many lovely cafes to sit in and watch the world go by along the Cours Mirabeau.
The afternoon is free for you to explore further at your own pace.
Day 3: Orange, L’Isle-sur-la-Sorgue and Châteauneuf-du-Pape
From the lovely town of L’Isle sur la Sorgue, known for its excellent antiques market, we approach Orange through the countryside. Home to two of the finest Roman monuments in Europe; the Theatre Antique d’Orange and the Arc de Triomphe, Orange’s old town is also worth exploring with its Hotel de Ville, Notre Dame Cathedral and peaceful shady squares.
The Popes of Avignon built Chateauneuf (new castle) and the surrounding vineyards which now produce one of the finest Côtes du Rhône red wines in the world. You will also have the opportunity to enjoy a light lunch in an old castle Wine Cellar on a Chateauneuf -du-Pape property, where you will see the vineyard but also have a wine tasting comparing a few different wines.
Day 4: Arles, Les Baux and Camargue Boat Cruise
Arles is best known for its fine Roman arena, baths and theatre – there are lovely views over the town from the arena’s top tier. It was also the sometime home of artists Van Gogh and Gauguin.
The ancient, ruined citadel of Les Baux clings to a high ridge of the Alpilles range, a stark contrast to its bustling, Renaissance other half situated just below. An area of outstanding natural beauty, the Camargue is a nature-lover’s paradise, famed for its flamingos and white horses. We will have a short boat cruise while in the Camargue.
Day 5: Pont du Gard and Roman Nîmes
The Pont du Gard is a remarkable symbol of the engineering capabilities of the Romans. Built over the Gardon River in 19BC and remarkably preserved, at 48 metres, it is the highest bridge the Romans ever constructed. Continue to Nîmes, often referred to as the ‘French Rome’ due to its wealth of Roman monuments.
Enjoy free time to explore the city, including the impressive Arenes de Nîmes, one of the best-preserved Roman amphitheatres in the world, along with its elegant squares and historic streets.
Day 6: Marseille and Cassis
Travel to Marseille, France’s oldest city and a vibrant Mediterranean port. Discover its bustling Old Port, historic quarter and coastal views.
In the afternoon, continue to the picturesque fishing village of Cassis, nestled between dramatic cliffs and azure waters. Here, enjoy time at leisure to wander along the harbour, relax in a café or simply soak up the laid-back Mediterranean atmosphere.
Day 7: Aix-en-Provence at Leisure
Today is yours to spend entirely at leisure in Aix-en-Provence. You may wish to revisit favourite spots, explore local markets, visit museums or take in the relaxed pace of Provençal life.
With its elegant streets, fountains and café culture, Aix provides the perfect setting for a leisurely final day.
Day 8: Return by TGV and Eurostar
Transfer by coach back to the station to catch the return TGV to Lille. At Lille, board the return Eurostar service to St Pancras.
