Day 1: Arrival in Salamanca
Fly to Madrid this morning. On arrival, travel west across the plains of Castile and León to Salamanca, one of the country’s most beautiful historic cities and a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
After settling into your hotel, enjoy a welcome drink with your fellow travellers, followed by dinner.
Day 2: Salamanca’s Golden Old Quarter
This morning, explore Salamanca on foot with a guided introduction to its architectural treasures. Begin at the magnificent Plaza Mayor, widely acclaimed as one of Spain’s finest Baroque squares.
Continue to the historic University of Salamanca, founded in 1218, with an intricately carved façade, a masterpiece of Spanish Plateresque design. Nearby, discover the remarkable pairing of the Old and New Cathedrals, standing side by side and showcasing a fascinating blend of Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque styles.
The afternoon is at leisure to enjoy Salamanca at your own pace—perhaps stroll along the banks of the River Tormes, visit a museum, or relax in one of the city’s cafés and soak up the atmosphere.
Day 3: Guijuelo, Ibérico Ham and La Alberca
Travel into the rural heart of Castile to Guijuelo, famed throughout Spain for its exceptional Ibérico ham. Here, learn about the traditional curing processes that have been preserved for generations, producing one of the country’s most prized delicacies.
Continue into the beautiful Sierra de Francia, a protected natural region of forested hills and dramatic scenery, arriving at La Alberca. This lovely village, one of Spain’s best-preserved medieval settlements, is characterised by timber-framed houses, stone facades and flower-filled balconies. Wander its cobbled streets and picturesque squares, where age-old customs still shape daily life, offering an authentic glimpse into rural traditions.
Day 4: Ávila’s Medieval Walls and Segovia’s Alcázar
Journey to Ávila, a city defined by its remarkably intact medieval walls which encircle the old town. Step through its ancient gates and explore a place steeped in religious heritage and closely associated with St Teresa.
Continue to Segovia, one of Spain’s most historic cities. Marvel at the Roman aqueduct, an engineering masterpiece that has dominated the skyline for almost 2,000 years. Also visit the fairy-tale Alcázar, its elegant turrets rising dramatically above the surrounding countryside.
Day 5: El Escorial and Historic Madrid
Visit the imposing Royal Monastery of El Escorial, a vast complex built by King Philip II. Combining palace, monastery and royal mausoleum, it stands as a powerful symbol of Spain’s Golden Age and its spiritual and imperial ambition.
Continue to Madrid, Spain’s vibrant capital. On arrival, enjoy a guided walk introducing its grand boulevards, elegant squares and historic landmarks, from the stately Plaza Mayor to the impressive Royal Palace.
Day 6: Toledo, City of Three Cultures
Travel to Toledo, spectacularly situated on a hill above the River Tagus. Known as the “City of Three Cultures,” it reflects centuries of coexistence between Christian, Muslim and Jewish communities.
Wander through a maze of narrow streets lined with historic churches, former mosques and synagogues. During your visit, admire El Greco’s celebrated masterpiece, The Burial of the Count of Orgaz, a highlight of Spain’s artistic heritage and a fitting reflection of the city’s rich cultural legacy.
Day 7: Madrid at Leisure and Flamenco Evening
Enjoy a full day at leisure to explore Madrid further at your own pace. Perhaps visit one of the city’s world-class art galleries, such as the Prado or Reina Sofía, stroll through Retiro Park, or browse elegant boutiques and traditional markets.
In the evening, experience the passion and drama of Spain’s most iconic art form with a flamenco performance.
Day 8: Return Flight from Madrid
After breakfast, enjoy some free time in Madrid before transferring to the airport for your return flight to London.
