Wildflowers and Splendours of the Western Algarve

There is so much more to the Algarve than sun, sea, and golf courses — something our popular “Authentic Algarve” tour has already revealed. For decades, our Head of Sales & Marketing, Ellen Walker, has cultivated a deep affection for this extraordinary region, returning time and again to discover its hidden corners, reconnect with familiar faces, and share the places that have become so special to her.

Her latest journey invites you to experience the Algarve at its most enchanting: a springtime celebration of wildflowers, dramatic landscapes, and the natural treasures that define this remarkable corner of Portugal. From the rugged beauty of the Costa Vicentina Natural Park and the windswept cliffs of Cape St. Vincent to the vibrant ecosystems of the Ria Alvor and the lush valleys of the Monchique Mountains, this tour reveals a side of the Algarve shaped by nature, tradition, and time.

Along the way, discover coastal paths adorned with seasonal blooms, ancient monuments, historic villages, and landscapes where rare plants thrive in harmony with the Atlantic environment. Meet local producers, taste regional specialities, and experience the warmth of communities that have preserved the Algarve’s authentic character for generations.

As with all our tours to this captivating region, exceptional scenery, genuine hospitality, and delicious local cuisine combine to create a truly unforgettable journey through the Algarve’s wild and wonderful landscapes.

Your Itinerary

Explore this incredible tour in detail and discover what makes each day so special. Below, you’ll find a full day-by-day breakdown of your journey, from the moment you arrive to your final farewell. Learn more about the highlights you’ll experience, the unforgettable places you’ll visit, and the unique moments that bring each destination to life. Whether you’re drawn by rich history, stunning landscapes or unforgettable cultural encounters, this itinerary gives you everything you need to picture your adventure and look forward to every step of the way.

Day 1: Arrival and Aljezur

After arrival at Faro Airport, transfer to the Vicentina Hotel in Aljezur. In the afternoon, wander through the historic heart of Aljezur, with its whitewashed houses and intricate traditional tiles. Explore the 12th-century Aljezur Castle, perched above the town, and step into the region’s past at The House Museum.

As evening falls, enjoy a welcome reception before dinner with local flavours – house beverages included.

Day 2: Aljezur, Arrifana & Montes Clérigos

After breakfast, set off into the Costa Vicentina Natural Park, a paradise for nature lovers. Your first stop: Arrifana, where the Ribat of Arrifana, a Muslim coastal fortress built around 1130, offers panoramic views over the Atlantic and a glimpse into the region’s rich history.

Continue along trails fringed with wildflowers and dune vegetation toward Montes Clérigos, an unforgettable coastal landscape that showcases the rugged beauty of Portugal’s western edge.

Return to Aljezur in the late afternoon and enjoy dinner at a local restaurant, sampling authentic Algarve cuisine.

Day 3: Coastal Wildflowers & Nature Walks

Breakfast at the hotel sets the tone for a day in nature. Begin at Praia da Amoreira, a golden sandy beach framed by cliffs and vibrant vegetation, where gentle walks allow you to feel the sea breeze and connect with the surrounding flora.

In the afternoon, stroll along the Aljezur River, crossing orchards that cultivate the region’s signature sweet potatoes, and immerse yourself in the lush, river-fed ecosystem. Return to the hotel and enjoy dinner at leisure.

Day 4: Sagres, Cape St. Vincent & Vila do Bispo

Check out and venture southwest to Sagres, starting with Ponta da Atalaia, a haven of endemic plants thriving in extreme coastal conditions. Discover the historic Sagres Fortress, its chapel, and museum – a tribute to Portugal’s Age of Discoveries.

Next, marvel at Cape St. Vincent, Europe’s most southwesterly point, followed by a light snack lunch in a wild terrain, tasting fresh goat cheese and meeting a local shepherd. The afternoon brings a journey back in time at the Padrão Menhir, a 6,500-year-old megalithic monument, before relaxing at Ingrina Beach, a golden crescent nestled among cliffs.

Later, check in to the Praia da Rocha Hotel Oriental and dine at a local restaurant.

Day 5: Leisure Day

Today is yours to unwind. Lounge by the pool, explore the beach, or simply soak in the Algarve sun. Meals are at your own pace, allowing for a day of relaxation.

Day 6: Monchique Mountains & Scenic Villages

After breakfast, journey to the Monchique Mountains, where lush forests and vibrant wildflowers await. Ascend to Foia, the region’s highest peak, to admire sweeping panoramic views and spot springtime blooms like rockroses, orchids, and lavender.

Explore the historic 15th-century church, then experience the traditional Medronho tasting – a local strawberry tree spirit. Meander through the picturesque villages of Alferce and Caldas de Monchique, with a lunch at a local restaurant included. Return to the hotel in the afternoon for dinner at leisure.

Day 7: Lagos, Ponta da Piedade & Ria do Alvor

Your final adventure begins with a visit to Lagos and the iconic Ponta da Piedade, where golden limestone cliffs, hidden grottos, and turquoise waters create a photographer’s dream.

Enjoy lunch at your leisure in Lagos or Alvor, then wander through Ria do Alvor Nature Reserve, a haven for migratory birds and local wildlife, framed by the economic lifeblood of traditional fishing and shellfish.

The day concludes with a farewell dinner in a local restaurant, celebrating your journey through the Algarve’s natural and cultural wonders.

Day 8: Departure

After breakfast, transfer to Faro Airport for your onward journey, carrying memories of wildflowers, cliffs, and the unspoiled beauty of southwest Portugal.

In almost all cases, the price includes your accommodation, meals as described in the itinerary, all excursions shown in the programme, and travel arrangements from the UK. Excursions are taken by private coach exclusively for Travel Editions guests. If anything is ever excluded from the price, it will be clearly marked as optional and payable locally, you won’t find any hidden extras on your final bill. Travel Editions operates a firm no-surcharge policy, so the price you are quoted is the price you pay.

For flights, all costs are based on economy class unless otherwise stated, and all times shown are local time. For tours in the UK, these often start at the hotel in question.

Flight upgrades and connections from regional airports are available on request and subject to availability, contact us on 020 7251 0045 or at tours@traveleditions.co.uk for details. We strongly recommend not booking non-refundable connecting travel until you have received your final joining instructions, which are sent around 10 days before departure and confirm all timings and meeting points.

Sharing is subject to another traveller in the same situation being booked on the same tour.

Each tour is accompanied by a dedicated tour manager, who in most cases will travel out from the UK with the group. On some tours, the tour manager will meet you at your destination station or airport, with full details being confirmed in your joining instructions 10 days before travel.
