Julian Humphrys
Julian read history at Emmanuel College, Cambridge, and has worked at historic sites in Britain and abroad. A trustee of the Battlefields Trust and Fellow of the Royal Society of Arts, he has written widely on castles, battles and military history.

Day 1: Portsmouth to the Isle of Wight
Meet your fellow travellers at Portsmouth Harbour at approx. 13.00 and board the Wightlink ferry as foot passengers for the crossing to the Isle of Wight. On arrival at Fishbourne, transfer to your hotel and settle in before the start of the tour.
Later this afternoon, enjoy a welcome drinks reception, followed by an introductory talk from historian Julian Humphrys, and dinner with wine.
Day 2: Brading Roman Villa and Ventnor Botanic Garden
After breakfast, visit Brading Roman Villa, one of the most important Roman sites in Britain. The award-winning museum is built around the remains of the villa, protecting its internationally significant mosaics and archaeological discoveries. A self-guided visit allows time to explore the displays and gain an understanding of life in Roman Britain. Lunch is included today at the villa café.
In the afternoon, continue to Ventnor Botanic Garden, situated in the island’s unique microclimate on the Undercliff. Often described as Britain’s hottest garden, it supports an extraordinary collection of subtropical and Mediterranean plants that thrive in conditions rarely found elsewhere in the country. The garden’s diverse collections and spectacular coastal setting make it one of the highlights of any visit to the Isle of Wight.
The remainder of the afternoon is at leisure. Relax at the hotel or take a stroll into the Victorian seaside town of Ventnor, with its attractive promenade, shops and cafés.
Dinner with wine is served at the hotel.
Day 3: Carisbrooke Castle and Mottistone Gardens
This morning, visit Carisbrooke Castle, the historic heart of the Isle of Wight for more than eight centuries. The castle is perhaps best known as the place of imprisonment of King Charles I before his trial and execution, but its history extends from the Norman period through to the twentieth century. Explore the impressive fortifications, museum displays and attractive grounds while discovering the stories of the many individuals connected with the site.
Later, enjoy a visit to Mottistone Gardens, one of the island’s finest gardens. Sheltered by the downs and benefiting from a favourable climate, the gardens contain beautiful herbaceous borders, shrubs and productive planting, while the surrounding estate offers wonderful views across the island’s countryside. There will be time to explore both the gardens and wider estate at leisure.
Dinner with wine is served at the hotel.
Day 4: Osborne House and St Mildred’s Church
After breakfast, visit Osborne House, Queen Victoria’s much-loved seaside retreat and one of the island’s most important historic sites. Designed in the style of an Italian Renaissance villa, Osborne offers a remarkable insight into royal family life during the nineteenth century. Explore the richly furnished State Apartments, the private rooms used by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, and the extensive grounds and gardens. There will also be time to visit the charming Swiss Cottage, created as an educational retreat for the royal children and providing a unique glimpse into Victorian ideas of childhood and learning.
Later, visit St Mildred’s Church, Whippingham, which enjoyed a close association with Queen Victoria and the royal household. The church contains a wealth of royal connections and fine Victorian craftsmanship, making it one of the island’s most interesting ecclesiastical buildings.
Return to the hotel where Julian Humphrys will deliver a further talk, expanding on themes encountered during the tour. Dinner with wine follows.
Day 5: Yarmouth Castle, Farringford House and The Needles
Today’s programme begins with a visit to Yarmouth Castle, one of Henry VIII’s coastal fortresses built to defend England against invasion. Commanding impressive views across the Solent, the castle provides a fascinating introduction to Tudor coastal defence and the island’s long strategic importance.
There will be free time for lunch in the attractive harbour town of Yarmouth, with its historic streets, waterside setting and independent cafés.
In the afternoon, visit Farringford, the former home of Alfred, Lord Tennyson. During a guided tour of the house, learn about the life and work of one of Britain’s greatest Victorian poets and the distinguished visitors who gathered here during his residence. Afterwards, enjoy time to explore the beautiful gardens, which have been carefully restored to reflect their nineteenth-century appearance.
We then continue to the Old Needles Battery, dramatically positioned on the western tip of the island overlooking the famous Needles rocks and lighthouse. Built to defend the Solent and later adapted for secret rocket-testing programmes, the site combines military history with some of the finest coastal views on the Isle of Wight.
Return to the hotel for a farewell dinner with wine.
Day 6: Quarr Abbey & Departure
On our final day, visit Quarr Abbey, one of the most distinctive religious buildings on the Isle of Wight. During a guided tour, learn about the history of the Benedictine community and the remarkable architecture of this early twentieth-century monastery. There will also be time to explore the peaceful grounds and gardens, browse the visitor centre and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere of the estate.
Lunch is included in the abbey tearoom before we transfer to Fishbourne Ferry Terminal and board the Wightlink ferry as foot passengers for the return crossing to Portsmouth.
