Day 1: Travel by Eurostar from St Pancras to Lille and onwards to Lyon by TGV. On arrival, transfer to the village of Challes-les-Eaux (approx. 1 hour 30 minutes) for check-in.
Day 2: Full day tour to Grenoble and Chartreuse.
Grenoble is a vivacious place nestled amongst the peaks of the Belledonne, Chartreuse and Vercors mountains. Being a university city it is cosmopolitan with a buzzing arts scene whilst at its centre you’ll find a tightly packed maze of modern and medieval buildings. Travelling into the Chartreuse massif you will find a glorious landscape of peaks, valleys, pine forests and pastures – a breath-taking view at every turn. The name is perhaps best known from the Carthusian monastery named from the mountains, as well as the liqueur that was produced by the monks and is still produced in Voiron today.
Day 3: Full day tour to Lyon with Christmas Eve dinner at the hotel.
Rich from industry that spans back to the 16th century, Lyon is a clean and charming city, particularly known for its gastronomy – it is said that the old town has the largest concentration of restaurants in the world! There are plenty of cultural attractions to visit including a textile museum, a Gallo-Roman Museum and the impressive Basilica Notre Dame. There is much enjoyment to be had wandering the atmospheric warren of streets in the older quarters of the city, where you’ll find lots of Renaissance buildings and a multitude of restaurants to choose from.
Day 4: Day free to relax with festive lunch and dinner at the hotel.
Day 5: Full day tour to Abbaye d’Hautecombe and Aix-les-Bains
The tranquil Abbaye d’Hautecombe, located on the shores of Lake Bourget, is a former Cistercian then Benedictine monastery and burial place of the House of Savoy. The spa town of Aix-les-Bains, known since Roman times, is renowned for the healing qualities of its waters. The elegant Belle-Époque buildings, that sprung up in the late 1800s, are best enjoyed at a relaxed pace whilst the Faure Museum houses a collection of Impressionist works and Rodin statues.
Day 6: Full day in Chambéry with guided tour and free afternoon for personal exploration.
Chambéry has guarded the mountain passes that lead to Italy for centuires. Originally just a château built by the Count of Savoie in 1232, the town grew around it and became an important commerical and cultural centre - there is plenty of majestic Italianate architecture from this golden age to admire. Highlights include its much-loved and extravagant Fontaine des Eléphants, Chateau of the Dukes of Savoy dating back to the 14th century and 17th century country house, Le Charmettes, once home to the philosopher Rousseau.
Day 7: Full day to Annecy and Lake Annecy.
One of the most attractive and popular towns in the French Alps, the town of Annecy sits on the banks of the lake of the same name surrounded by breathtaking alpine scenery. The imposing château on the hill and the Palais de l’Ile provide much historical interest, and you’ll find the canals and narrow passages of the 16th century old town enchanting. One of the largest lakes in France, Lake Annecy is surrounded by glorious mountain scenery and attractive towns and villages.
Day 8: Transfer to Lyon for return TGV to Lille and onwards by Eurostar to St Pancras.
NB: Exact order or excursions may vary according to local conditions and tour manager's discretion.

OUR VIEW ON THE HOTEL
The Chateau des Comtes de Challes is an impressive and charming hotel, owned and run by the Trèves family since 2002, which exudes a lovely atmosphere from its setting within two hectares of peaceful grounds. The hotel has been welcoming our guests for nearly a decade. Ask the charismatic manager, Florian Trèves, for a tour of his extensive wine cellars - he has vintages worth up to €1800!
Pre-tour accommodation is available at the Premier Travel Inn, London King's Cross St Pancras, about a 5 minute walk from St Pancras International, at an approximate rate of £120 per room. Bookings can be made direct with the hotel on 0871 527 8672 or visit their website.
A lovely holiday based at a characterful hotel in beautiful surroundings. Tour Manager Serge was excellent, attentive to the needs of the group and always helpful. Our driver Nicolas was also excellent. A well thought out tour in all respects. The excursions were all enjoyable, and the dining arrangements at the hotel - reserved round tables seating 8 people each - made for good social interaction within the group. After a grey first day we were blessed with lovely sunshine on most days, which really lifted the experience. A very enjoyable break.

The hotel accommodation was very good and food excellent. I enjoyed all the trips and the interesting commentaries by the local guides. The coach was comfortable and the timings well thought out. Our tour leader Serge Bertini was wonderfully informative and went to a great deal of trouble to make sure everyone was happy with the arrangements. We had some delays on Eurostar but that is out of Travel Editions' control.

Review by Shaw who travelled 21-December-2023
The tour went well in all respects but the train journeys. The brochure description was accurate, the hotel was as described (slightly quirky rooms as expected in such an old hotel, but in a good location and fairly good food). The hotel staff were friendly, but had trouble serving so many people in our and other parties at once. The tour manager was excellent, the coaches were comfortable and modern, and the driver very helpful. All the local guides were very good, too. We even had excellent weather after the first day's drizzle. The one let down was the trains. Three of the four were late, two by over 90 minutes, with no good explanation. Obviously this isn't TE's fault, but perhaps you can help with getting a partial refund from Eurostar? Delays of betwen 60 and 119 minutes entitle the passenger to a measly 25% cash refund (the train was 96 minutes late), but when I try to claim it, the web site says: "Sorry, we can’t process your claim Please check that you’ve entered all of your details correctly. If everything looks right, we’re sorry but you’re not eligible for compensation this time. You can find out more about compensation in our help centre or by checking our Conditions of Carriage." I'm guessing is that this is because this was a group booking, and refunds can only be paid to whoever made the booking. So, perhaps TE could claim on our behalf, and pass the 25% refunds on? My ticket details were: Booking reference: P4ZJYG Ticket number: 162464977 Scheduled arrival time: 15:57 Actual arrival time: 17:33 [The delay was purely Eurostar's fault: the scheduled e300 train had late running maintenancee, so they put on a different type of train as a late substiture, so we got different, less convenient carriage and seat numbers, in a less comfortable train.]

Serge was excellent, much better than most of the local guides but I understand need for local guides in order to get into some places, you had to have a local guide. Also of course it would have been even more work for Serge and he already went over and above what most tour guides/companies offer. He had anyway to keep his eye on the local guides and often had to help them with some details. All in all despite some unavoidable trouble with the trains, it was a very good holiday

First and foremost I must comment how much of a contribution our excellent tour manager made to the success of our holiday. Sheila Salmon was very knowledgeable, a great organiser who made Christmas fun and looked after all of us remarkably well. The chateau is charming and we were accorded a warm welcome. The catering was first class and for wine lovers this is a great opportunity to have the expertise of Monsieur Treves and his staff. We were however slightly disappointed having booked a junior suite which although pleasant, lacked adequate lighting in the main area to enable reading or writing. It would also have been nice to have found comfortable armchairs or a sofa instead of upright chairs. The staff at the Chateau were without exception cheerful and helpful

Lucky to be on last Eurostar through tunnel! Chateau delightful, though my room so modern (very practical) and bleak I took a Spider Plant from Reception to humanise it. Excellent Tour Manager who did his very best to accommodate requests.

A well organised holiday with an excellent tour manager who was informative and helpful throughout the holiday. Our first Christmas holiday with Travel Editions, we will definitely consider another Chrustmas break with them.
Review by Sumner who travelled 21-December-2023
The poor rail travel was nothing to do with TE and in fact could have been a lot worse (strike, floods...), but we were delayed in each direction by about 90mins. Will TE be claiming compensation for these and reimbursing us accordingly? There were some issues with the hotel's waiting staff's ability to cope with the variety of different dietary requirements of the group and Serge had to go through it with them a number of times. I am aware that it is not easy for staff under these circumstances but suspect it will get worse for them in future as this now seems to be the way of things (even in France!). I have a suggestion: maybe some sort of flag, colour-coded and/or labelled to reflect the requirements (fish-no-meat, vegetarian, no-red-meat, gluten-free etc), could be agreed between yourselves and the hotel once you have everybody's requirements, which each person would be responsible for taking to their meals and placing prominently by their place, thus indicating at a glance to the hard-working staff whom should be served what. Whilst we were all happy with the accommodation, I did have some issues with the pillows being too thin and hard and was disappointed that they were unable to offer me any other options. This was our fourth Christmas tour with TE and it lived up to our expectations, being overall a very good experience. The weather helped, of course, but the programme of excursions, guides and Serge himself all contributed to our enjoyment, with one exception. Aix-les-Bains apparently has nothing to offer unless one is a signed-up monarchist or is keen to hear all about British influence in the town - I, for one, do not go to France to hear about Britain, its monarchs and its subjects! The guide in Lyon (Christian) is also worth a mention - he was exemplary.

Loved the tour and found it most liberating to spend time in a country with a more understated and compact approach to Christmas than in the UK. Outbound travel in France was hard work because of a late and crowded train. It was some comfort to know that the French system is not unlike our own. If a suitable venue appears I’d do this again for the festive season.

The train journey to Savoie (although no fault of Travel Editions) was a complete nightmare as a result of French railway strikes which caused a 3 hour delay at Lille and the boarding of a train that was already at capacity. Most Travel Editions passengers were unable to access their seat because the train was double-booked following the cancellation of the previous service. This experience got the holiday off to a bad start with many passengers dreading a repeat performance on the return journey (which thankfully did not materialise). The tour guide Serge was exceptional in dealing not only with this very difficult situation but always went 'the extra mile' to resolve other issues. The hotel, especially the food, was excellent but the inclusion of some meals being taken elsewhere would have added variety. The only reason we did not rate the hotel as excellent was the dirty state of the carpets in some of the communal areas and bedrooms. The early starts to the daily tours were not welcomed but possibly had to be accepted due to the limited hours of daylight.
Review by Whitaker who travelled 22-December-2022
Train trip out was sabotaged by French railways, unfortunate delay in ridiculously cold Lille station, not TEd fault though. Chauteau was charming, our room decor/carpet etc a little tired and I should have thought in advance to ask for a room closer to the main facilities and with an accessible shower for my mobility-limited husband - the bath sides were incredibly high. The catering was excellent except for a distinct lack of green vegetable. Fine dining, nouvelle cuisine is brilliant for one or two 'special' meals but by day thee we were longing for fresh vegetables. All comments to help future bookings rather than serious criticism, we thoroughly enjoyed the trip.

This was an excellent holiday. The hotel facilities were good and the food to a high standard. The tour manager was very helpful and the benefit of having one coach driver for the whole week was noted. Despite the delay and overcrowding on the first SNCF journey from Lille to Lyon I still think there are advantages going via Lille that outweighs the need for a coach across Paris and the overcrowded Eurostar terminal. Serge, our Tour Manager on this trip was particularly good and nothing was too much trouble. His dry sense of humour and endless patience with some of the tour members were exemplary.
Review by Davidson who travelled 22-December-2022
We can fully recommend this tour. Th hotel had a relaxed and friendly atmosphere with excellent food and an extensive wine list. Our very knowledgeable Tour Manager, Serge did an admirable job tweaking the timetable as circumstances arose. The days out were well organised and enjoyable with good English-speaking guides. The coaches were comfortable but made even better by Nicolas, the expert driver. The outward-bound journey from Lille was horrendous and although Travel Editions were not responsible for the problem Serge dealt with the situation calmly and with good humour. The return transfer at Lille worked well and we would certainly prefer this to the Paris transfer on any future trips.

The tour guide, Serge Betini, is excellent . We really enjoyed his narratives, his account of local history, natural history . Altogether very informative and engaging and managed the group well. Also loved the hotel. Was a lovely break over the Xmas period. An attached study guide for the trip would be useful, so that we could look at this ahead of going on the trip. This could be added as a cde to be scanned , once the tour is booked, so that if we would find this useful we can look at it.

Serge was a brilliant tour manager. Apart from one course the food was of high quality. Service was good at all times. The outward trip was spoilt by the late Eurostar departure and chaotically by the 2 hour plus wait for the TGV at Lille. Serge did his best to keep us informed but communication by management at the station was poor.

Very good tour. Due to French train strike, the outward journey was a hassle. Hotel was excellent and my room was lovely. Thank you!
Review by Tjeknavorian who travelled 22-December-2022
An enjoyable trip with dry, albeit very cold weather - so cold, in fact, that we were 'forced' in both Lyon and Grenoble to forsake the streets and head indoors for lunch, despite the prospect of a 3-course meal in the evening, and in other locations we had to fortify ourselves with the 'vin chaud' available in Christmas markets. The hotel was warm and comfortable, if a little faded, and as a keen photographer we were fortunate to have a double aspect room with views out over the town to Mt Granier. The food was mostly well-cooked (apart from inedibly overcooked festive venison), but (for France) rather uninspired and predictable, and service in the restaurant and the bar was occasionally verging on the chaotic. The sightseeing tours were all urban, with very good local guides, but it would have been nice to vary things a bit with the opportunity to wander round a rural village and perhaps visit a producer of one of the excellent cheeses for which the area is renowned. Our tour manager, Sheila, was excellent, keeping us entertained above and beyond the call of duty and giving us the benefit of her 'insider' knowledge of France. She organised us in the most pleasant and professional manner, without ever mollycoddling, and ensured plenty of relaxing downtime. Altogether, an enjoyable way to spend Christmas, with the journey in each direction being the only demanding aspect.

Booked first class onTGV train but ended up sitting on table of four opposite strangers so no leg room both on journey out and on return. As this was the reason we booked first class it would have been better if you had two seats together or even the two single seats facing easy other. Other than this we had a excellent Holliday. Tour guide in Grenoble did not make any allowances for a group like ours. Kept us standing for quite a time in the cold telling us about the ancient parliamentary systems, Kings etc.,when all we wanted was to be shown round the city with plenty of time to have lunch and do our own thing. Otherwise the whole holiday was very enjoyable.

This was our 6th Christmas tour with Travel Editions and it was as good as ever. All the arrangements went smoothly and even the weather was unseasonably warm and sunny. The tours were generally interesting and informative and it was particularly good to see a side of Lyon that you would never know of from passing through in a summer traffic jam! The hotel was very good apart from somewhat small rooms, but the general welcome and excellent meals made up for that. Finally, thanks to Gary (the tour leader) for keeping everything running smoothly and injecting his note of dry humour into the proceedings. Hugh Paton

A lovely hotel in beautiful mountainous surroundings in which to enjoy an alternative French Christmas. The staff were kind and helpful, good restaurant, great wines. Tour manager Gary was unflappable and organised the day trips impeccably, including a friendly bus driver, Georges, who supplied us with local details and delicacies. A wonderful holiday!

Very good trip. High quality hotel, although room somewhat cramped (glad I wasn't sharing) and no bath. Food excellent, although would have preferred smaller tables of 4, 6 or 8. Xmas lunch at long table worked well. Tour manager very good, and accommodated dietary needs or likes and kept us all on schedule. Advantageous having a smaller group (22), interestingly different demographic from previous TE Xmas tours I've done (that didn't inc dinner) - I believe I was the only one who still works! A wider age span would have been better. Places visited were all good apart from Aix les Bains which does not merit a visit, or at least not more than and hour or 2 for lunch, especially when Faure museum and spa are shut. I suggest Chambery for Day 1, allowing longer there than we got this year (because of wine tasting). I appreciate there are always a number of logistics for the planning itinerary that I'm unaware of, but Aix was the weak point. Guided tours were excellent, especially at Chambery and Lyon. Would have liked more time everywhere (except Aix), which is positive as I know I'd like to return to Grenoble and Lyon. Although the hotel was excellent, I do prefer your tours without dinner, apart from Xmas eve/day, so staying in Chambery or Grenoble would appeal to me. Overall very positive, and snow on 27th for exhilarating drive over the Chartreuse was a bonus!

Overall an excellent holiday enhanced by lots of snow which made it very Christmassy. The staff at the Chateau, particularly Jonathan and Marie, were very attentive. Our driver, Nicholas and Tour Manager Gary made sure that everyone's taste was catered for. The only negative was two trips, Aix les Bains was closed on the day we visited and I didn't find Grenoble particularly interesting. The trips to Lyon and Annecy were excellent.

I enjoyed this overall, but was not happy with the first full day: the Abbey was fine but Aix offered very little to do if you didn't want to sit over a full meal at lunchtime.
