Vienna - Klimt and The Secession Escorted Tour

All tours on this holiday have now departed. Future departure dates will be confirmed in due course.

In 1897 a group, including Klimt, Moser, Hoffmann and Olbrich, formed the Vienna Secession, a group looking to explore the world of art without the restraints of academia and tradition, and in this respect, had no prevailing or prescribed style in which they worked.

With the construction of the Secession exhibition house in 1898 the group were also able to hold exhibitions of new, unconventional artists and the best foreign artists that were seen as ‘avant garde’. Join Prof Anne Anderson to discover some of the Secession’s finest works in stately Vienna in the year of the centenary of inspirational architect Otto Wagner’s death (2018) with a host of special exhibitions throughout the city.

The group size on this tour is limited to 25 passengers to ensure that smaller sites can be visited and that you get a high level of attention.

ITINERARY

Day 1:  Fly from London Heathrow to Vienna
Transfer by coach for check into hotel. This afternoon there will be a short walking tour of the historic Graben area and external visit of the magnificent Postal Savings Bank, designed and built by Otto Wagner, before a welcome reception, lecture by Anne Anderson 'The Vienna Secession' and dinner with wine.

Day 2:  Morning visit to the Museum for the Applied Arts (MAK),
which features collections of furniture, glass, china, silver. After lunch, visit the Ernst Fuchs Museum - a once derelict Wagner villa that was acquired and restored by Ernst Fuchs in 1972, followed by the tour highlight - Wagner's Am Steinhof Church, a triumph of architecture as a 'total work of art'. This evening we will have our second lecture - 'Gustav Klimt and Egon Schiele'.

Day 3:  The day begins at the Leopold Museum's collection,
including key Secession works, and a special exhibition on 'Egon Schiele - Expression and Lyricism'. On the 100th anniversary of Egon Schiele's death the Leopold Museum is putting on a exhibition showcasing a group of his paintings and graphic artworks which will be presented for the first time along with various handwritten pieces, poems, photographs and objects from his life. Afternoon visit to the Wien Museum with its collection of paintings from the turn of the 20th century featuring Klimt, Schiele and Gerstl and a special exhibition devoted to Otto Wagner. Marking the 100th anniversary of the death of Otto Wagner, the Wien Museum is dedicating its exhibition to his life and work including precious sketches, models, items of furniture, paintings and personal effects. Across the Karlsplatz you may spot the Otto Wagner Pavilion, a beautiful Jugendstil building. The final visit is to the Vienna Secession. Built by Joseph Maria Olbrich in 1897, as a representation of all the Secessionists stood for and an exhibition space, the building is home to Klimt's Beethoven Frieze. In 2018 they will host a special exhibition 'Gustav Klimt, Koloman Moser and the Art of thier Time'. Please note that today all transfers are by public transport. This evening we will have dinner at a local restaurant.

Day 4:  Morning visit to historic Baroque palace of Lower and Upper Belvedere,
whose fantastic art collection includes a number of Viennese Secession works, most notable Klimt's The Kiss and a special exhibition for 2018, 'Austria-Hungary 1918'. This exhibition focuses on the exciting artistic advances that happened during this period looking at the Viennese greats such as Klimt and Schiele.  Transfer back to Vienna airport for return flight home.

Fantastic - very comprehensive tour, tour manager and lecturer excellent. Hotel room very cramped & stuffy & under eves, had to ask for air con to be fixed as sweltering on first nights & couldn't sleep. Otherwise perfect. Any chance that lectures notes could be emailed as have misplaced... ?

The hotel, in particular, was excellent. In addition to very good service and food, the layout of the hotel was very interesting.

The skill and expertise of our tour guide are well-documented and well-deserved. I was lucky to experience them at first hand. I should like to make special mention of Sandra, our tour manager, not just for her indefatigable care and attention but for the excellent (unadvertised) 'tour guide' she provided on our coach travels around Vienna. The richness of the information she shared with us and the ease of her delivery was a welcome and unexpected bonus. Thank you, Sandra.

The unnecessarily early start to arrive at a hotel that wasn't ready to receive us was both tiring and annoying. Apart from that the tour was intensive but fine.

This was an excellent trip which surpassed my expectations. One grumble - was it really necessary to fly out so early? I was falling asleep in the evening lecture and I was not alone.

It was Anne Anderson's enthusiasm at Northampton and Leicester (Mackintosh/ Gimson etc) that encouraged us to take this trip - we were not disappointed. A really great weekend with a friendly group. Sandra Drake's exceptional skill as Tour Manager was a delight and her sensitive response to her guests limitations was especially appreciated.

An enjoyable and interesting tour. Anne Anderson was terrific as always and I really enjoyed and valued her input. There were a couple of minor occasions when I felt our time could have been used better-waiting to get into the Burg Theatre and going round the interior of the Ernest Fuchs House- but overall it was a great tour and I learned a lot.

The inclusion of the visit to the Burgtheater was not a success and the time would have been better spent at the Leopold Museum or having a break between that and the Wien Museum.

While I appreciate there is a lot to see, perhaps this tour could have been better paced. Specifically, the Saturday afternoon trips to the Ernst Fuchs Museum and the Am Steinhof Church added little to the overall experience.

Very good briefing from Dr Ann Anderson, but too much standing about and strenuous activity for some more elderly members of the group. Sandra McGill,Tour Manager was very supportive of two elderly members who suffered health problems.

A very enjoyable trip with an interesting itinerary. Ann Anderson was as good as we remembered from Nancy - hugely knowledgeable, fun, friendly and helpful. And we'd like to put in a special word about Sandra, the tour manager, who had to cope with a number of health problems among group members which she did admirably, as well as looking after everyone else. She really was efficient, unflappable and exceedingly kind. A small point: I'm not sure why you addressed this questionaire and the confirmation invoice to my husband when I booked and paid for the trip.

I have already responded via Sandra McGill but just in case here is my response again. Our only problem was with the change in departure time and airport after we had already booked and paid the deposit. We wanted Gatwick and an afternoon departure. Heathrow in the morning meant an overnight stay there and it was more expensive in both money and time to get to as well.
