ITINERARY

Day 1 Fly from Gatwick to Faro and transfer to hotel in the city centre for seven-night stay. Welcome drink and dinner with wine.

Day 2 Tavira with lunch at a local restaurant and hilltop village of Cacela Velha.
This morning enjoy a walking tour around Tavira. The town combines two Mediterranean staples: Moorish architecture and a golden sand beach. Here a labyrinth of cobbled streets wind past houses tiled in the traditional Portuguese style and the pace of life flows as gentle as the Gilão River. Lunch will be at a local restaurant. In the afternoon travel by coach to pretty, whitewashed, hilltop village of Cacela Velha, which offers lovely views of the easternmost lagoon of the Ria Formosa.

Day 3 Loule Rocksalt mines and Quinta da Tor vineyard for tour, tasting and tapas.
In the Campina de Cima rock salt mine, beneath the city of Loulé, lies a giant labyrinth. The four-levelled maze dug by miners over the last 50 years is rich in salt. Now, this underground Pombaline town offers visitors an unusual, entertaining and educational experience. Learn about the life and legacy of Saint Barbara, the miner's patron, through an engaging artistic exhibition inside the mine. Please note the underground path covers some 1.4km so may be unsuitable for those with walking difficulties.   Then to the Quinta da Tor vineyard to enjoy a tour, wine-tasting and tapas lunch.

Day 4 Lagos, Cape St Vicente – the “End of the World” and Sagres with lunch.
We start the day in Lagos, an historic city situated on the beautiful Western Algarve coastline.  One of the most popular tourist destinations in the Algarve, it has retained its charm and character, with cobbled streets lined with whitewashed buildings.  Then to Cape St Vicente, the south westernmost point of Portugal and Europe heading out into the Atlantic, topped with a dramatic lighthouse.  It is often referred to as “the end of the world.”  The nearby village of Sagres has a fort, harbour, locally beaches and a host of appealing restaurants, where we will include lunch.

Day 5 Faro free day to explore the city and Christmas market.
Christmas Eve is free to explore the lovely city of Faro, capital of the Algarve region and overlooked by the vast majority of tourists who flock to its airport and on to other destinations up and down the coast.  It is their great loss, as it is a charming, historic and cultural city with a wealth of attractions including an atmospheric old town with Gothic Cathedral, Paco Episcopal Palace and decorative Arco da Vila gateway.  Festive dinner with wine at the hotel and option to attend Midnight mass in the glorious Se Cathedral.

Day 6 Full day free with festive lunch at a local restaurant including wine. The temperate Algarve climate will mean that you can enjoy working up an appetite for Christmas Day lunch with a Christmas morning walk either around the marina and old city or even to Faro beach.

Day 7 Ria Formosa boat cruise and fishing port of Olhao.
The harbour opens onto the calm lagoons and waters of the Parque Natural da Ria Formosa, a small group of barrier islands. Embark on a boat tour and cruise among the fascinating islands of the Ria Formosa lagoons, a hidden gem of the Algarve. See local fishermen at work, shellfish farms and enjoy the bird life. In the afternoon there will be a guided tour of Olhão, a picturesque fisherman’s town with Moorish inspired whitewashed buildings and  bustling old quarter. There will be free time before returning to the hotel with time to freshen up before our farewell dinner at the Vila Adentro restaurant inside the Roman Walls.

Day 8 Transfer to the airport for return flight to Gatwick

Considering this was a new holiday, it ran extremely smoothly and really could not be faulted. Ellen was a superlative tour manager, and I am sure that was a reason why we were a harmonious group. My only suggestion ( which I'm have already mentioned to Ellen) was that we should have had a group entry ticket to the Fortress at Sagres, or another means of speeding up the entry process. It was a wonderful holiday, and we were particularly lucky to have pleasant weather. Luís was an excellent local guide, and a very friendly and helpful guy.

This was the first trip, I know Ellen is planning some tweaks - we discussed that Christmas Eve and Christmas Lunch as Hotel Buffets was a buffet too many, and that a christmas lunch just for the group in a small Restaurant would be better.

The hotel was in the perfect location, but my room was overheated till I realised I just had to open the door a lot, and shut off the a/c. It might be worth warning future guests of this. The hotel is right next to the local railway line, and very close to Faro station. I'd have quite liked it if one of our outings was by train in at least one direction. The train probably has nice views, too. The hotel breakfast buffets were excellent, but it was a bit monotonous having both Christmas meals at the same buffet (with some repeated dishes). It would be better if one of those meals was in a local restaurant. The restaurant where we had the selfpay tapas dinner had the best food of the trip, though I wasn't a fan of the mournful Fado songs. On the last day, when we visited Olhão, lunch was a bit of a scramble (walking back from where the coach dropped us, finding a restaurant with a suitable menu, getting served, etc). I would have much preferred to have had a local seafood lunch provided on the fishing island we visited on the tour. I was happy to get a soft copy itinerary, but it would have been nice if it was more detailed, with timings. Also, I'd welcome sort sort of electronic updates during the tour, such as a dedicated WhatsApp group, or even just group text messages. However, I realise that some guests aren't exactly fans of technology! I liked that there were activities available on every day except Christmas Day itself. I don't think this is true of all TE's Christmas holidays. But surely thinks like €1.50 admission fees to museums should be included? Incidentally, the slavery museum in Lagos wasn't worth visiting, as it had almost no useful content. I'd have liked to learn more about Portugal's role in the slave trade. Conversely, I'd have liked longer in Sagres. Obviously, the flights home were a problem, but there wasn't much TE could do about fog in Gatwick causing delayed/cancelled flights! Last year's Savoui tour also suffered from delayed trains.

This tour was good but with a few modifications could easily be regarded as excellent. Some of the meals lacked any really good options for pescatarians/vegetarians. In fact we noticed a distinct lack of vegetables on several occasions. The wine tasting excursion was nice but the food offered was really poor when the local cuisine could be so much better. Clear evidence on show in the market halls and we saw the really superb food on offer. Ellen is a very good tour manager and Luis the local guide was excellent as well. Not sure that the Whisper system was necessary on many occasions though. Our return flight was very delayed due to Europe wide fog problems but the waiting time to board did not spoil a very good Christmas trip.

Weather was amazing, warm and sunny everyday. Hotel very comfortable. though we felt the lack of a lounge to meet and discuss things with fellow guests. Food excellent. Coffee disappointing. Overall a great trip and Ellen and Luis were very helpful and full of interesting information

I expected there would be some teething problems given that it was a new tour but no, both the tour manager and our guide were excellent and everything went smoothly. The food - mostly served as a buffet - was of a good standard too, with plenty of choice. Breakfasts were first class!
