Walking in Umbria Tour

All tours on this holiday have now departed. Future departure dates will be confirmed in due course.

  • We have a handy rating for each walking tour to let you know how strenuous it maybe.

  • Moderate: Relatively few hills and moderate walking terrain.

  • Challenging: More hills (up to 300 or 400 metres of elevation in a day) and more difficult walking terrain.

  • Difficult: Some considerable hills (500 metres or more of elevation in a day) and some difficult terrain

Often overlooked in favour of its neighbouring region, Tuscany, Umbria is a region that deserves a more elevated reputation. Renowned for its extraordinary architectural and artistic heritage in Assisi and elsewhere, as well as its superb cuisine, it is a region, too, that is a superb destination for a walking tour, with beautiful scenery punctuated by charming towns and villages to reward the hungry and thirsty hiker. This brand new tour, escorted by local expert and resident, Roberto, is based at the delightful Antica Dimora alla Rocca Hotel in the heart of the small but beautiful hilltop town of Trevi, a hotel we have used for a decade now, to universal acclaim. Our itinerary takes us through wonderful scenery with glorious views, no doubt fuelled by the excellent local cuisine and wine!

ITINERARY

We have graded each day’s difficulty with an approximate distance so that you can decide if this tour is the one for you.

Day 1: Fly from London Heathrow to Rome.
On arrival in Rome, transfer by coach to Trevi (approx. two hours) and the Hotel Antica Dimora Alla Rocca. This evening a welcome drink will be served and dinner will follow in the hotel restaurant.

Day 2: Fonti del Clitunno: Moderate / Challenging Approx 9km/3 hours: Mostly level or gently downhill with a few short steep downhill stretches on stoney ground
Start with short stroll around Trevi (45 mins); then we ease into our first day of walking with a walk along the olive oil road to the beautiful Fonti del Clitunno (Springs of Clitunno) which inspired a poem “Alle fonti del Clitunno” by famous Italian poet, Giosue Carducci. On the walk through olive groves, we pass the pretty medieval village of San Benedetto, now an artists’ colony, and also stop for olive oil tasting before returning to the hotel by coach. This evening we have dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: Montefalco: Moderate Approx 9km/3 hours: Mostly on the level, mostly easy underfoot
This morning we head by coach to Montefalco, a medieval walled hill town at the centre of the famous eponymous wine region. From here we will walk from the town centre to a viewpoint from the ‘Ringhiera d’Umbria’ - the Balcony of Umbria. We then coach alongside the vineyards to a winery for a wine tasting and light lunch (included).  Return by coach to the hotel. This evening we have dinner at the hotel.

Day 4: Rasiglia and Volperino: Challenging Approx 10km/3 hours: Steep inclines on ascent and descent, mostly on footpaths
A more challenging day is in store today as we walk through mountain paths from one pretty village, Rasiglia, to another, Volperino, and back, with splendid views at every turn.  This evening we have dinner at the hotel.

Day 5: Full day at leisure in Trevi to relax
Time to recharge today with a full day to relax in Trevi.  Dinner is not included this evening, so perhaps take the opportunity to try one of the hostelries in the town square.

Day 6: Trevi and Truffles: Moderate / Challenging Approx 8km/3.5 hours: Mostly downhill initially, with a fairly steep incline from the lowest part of Trevi to the very top, via road and paths
Today we explore the surrounds of our base town, Trevi, as well as enjoying a visit to La Cucina di San Pietro a Pettine, a family run restaurant, for a truffle hunting experience followed by lunch. Here, we will enter into the forest with expert truffle hunters and their trusted dogs searching for the precious truffle and you will learn all about the ancient tradition of truffle hunting which remains unchanged for centuries. Afterwards you will enjoy lunch at the restaurant before returning on foot to Trevi. Evening at leisure.

Day 7: Collepino to Spello: Moderate Approx 8km/3hours: Mostly level, mostly easy underfoot
Our final day of walking takes us from the medieval village of Collepino along the olive tree roads following the medieval acqueduct to Spello. Originally a Roman settlement, pink stoned Spello sits above the Vale of Spoleto and its languid charms of this medieval town call for a leisurely stroll of the old streets.  Return to the hotel by coach.  This evening we have dinner at the hotel.

Day 8: Transfer from the hotel to Rome Airport with an en-route visit to Spoleto.

Overall Impression

The late change of flight times was a shock, fortunately my family were very accommodating in adapting to the situation. The accomodation was disappointing. I paid an excess for single use of double room, but it was very cramped with a small double bed and there was not enough room for 2 suitcases. The room was ok for me, but I feel I was charged for something I didn't get. The evening meals were disappointing, lacking consistency in standards, from good to poor Roberto planned some excellent walks each one with interesting activities/places of interest. However I was concerned about, though because he waited to make sure slower walkers could catch up he continued as soon as they caught up and didn't give them time recover. Tessa was excellent. She explained situations so we could enter cafes/shops with confidence, she made suggestions for our "free time" and organised them for us, as well as being knowledgeable and a very pleasant person. These are observations that I have passed on hoping they will be helpful. I had great holiday and will be in touch shortly to book my next one with Travel Editions. Sharon Unsworth

Overall Impression

This was a 5* tour and thoroughly enjoyable from start to finish. The group of twelve of us was delightful; the tour seemed to appeal to like-minded souls. The tour manager Tessa Say was outstanding in every way: highly efficient, never flappy, collaborative, charming and friendly. The guide Roberto was likewise excellent: he managed to give just the right amount of information and avoided the ever-present danger with guides of their rambling on endlessly. He even tolerated my Italian! We had a most efficient and professional driver in Luigi. The programme of walking had been very well devised. I had some reservations about the hotel. Breakfast was always excellent, although staff were not very evident on the first few mornings leaving us wondering what to do. A few labels indicating what cakes and cheeses actually were would have been welcome. Dinner was initially very good but deteriorated during the week; no menus on the table (although Tessa read us the menu during each day). I was particularly surprised at how often Reception was unattended. It is an office almost hidden away in a side room and rarely did anyone venture out to ask if guests wanted drinks or ... . Early morning and late afternoon it was deserted. Odd for a 4* hotel. My room was very clean, although the air-conditioning stated in the brochure was not available. Too few electric sockets, if I am allowed to be pernickety.
